1434911 Detecting oestrus in animals NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 4 May 1973 [4 May 1972] 20845/72 Heading A1M [Also in Divisions AS and G1] A method for detecting, oestrus in non- human female animals, comprises determining the concentration of peroxidase enzymes in the cervico-vaginal tract. A device for sampling the cervico-vaginal tract, comprises sampling means 3 located in a protective sheath 1 and means 4 for advancing the sampling means 3 through and withdrawing it into the sheath 1. The sampling means 3 is an absorbent gauze or other suitable materials which are listed. The enzyme concentration is determined using a chromagen which is contacted with the sample while inside or outside the vaginal tract. Suitable chromagens are listed. The chromagen may be coated on an internal area 5 of the sheath 1 which is transparent or translucent and made of a polymeric material. A line 6 and a sliding flange 7 aid in correctly locating the device in the vaginal tract. One end of the sheath 1 is covered by a thin membrane secured to the sheath 1. The concentration of the enzyme may, alternatively, be determined using a probe having an oxygen detecting tip.
