Abstract

1434841 Hydrostatic steering systems EATON CORP 28 March 1973 [3 April 1972] 14945/73 Heading B7H [Also in Division F1] In a hydrostatic steering controller 10 comprising relatively rotatable valve elements 41, 42 and a metering section with intermeshing toothed rotor and stator members 70, 34 for controlling the application of fluid to a steering motor 24 linked to steerable wheels 29, one end of an axial bore 76 in the rotor 70 is sealed by a plate 108 so that the rotor is pressed by fluid pressure into frictional engagement with one end plate 32 of the metering section to create a braking force on the rotor 70 which is proportional to the output pressure communicated to the steering motor 54 so that the manual steering effort increases markedly to inhibit further rotation of a steering wheel 54 when the output pressure rises to a maximum at full lock. A pressure-tight casing 100 surround the metering section is pressurized from within the metering section through a passage 110 in the other end plate 36. The pressure in the casing 100 controls distortion of the metering section components to reduce leakage around the rotor 70 and consequent loss of correspondence between movements of the steering wheel 54 and the steered wheels 29. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the housing (100<SP>1</SP>) surrounding the metering section is pressurized through a passage (120) in the stator member (34<SP>1</SP>) and no sealing plate is provided in the rotor bore (76<SP>1</SP>) inward distortion of the end plate (36<SP>1</SP>) of the metering section under the external pressure being relied on to produce a braking force on the rotor (70<SP>1</SP>).
