Abstract

1434614 Structural joints SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 3 May 1973 [5 May 1972] 20999/73 Heading F2M [Also in Division G5] A construction element for forming spatial structures such as prisms, tetrahedrons, other regular or irregular polyhedrons, or fantasy structures, comprises a plate-like element having at least two straight sides which are provided each or together with a male lip and an apertured female lip, the lips being hinged along the relevant straight side to form an integral unit with the plate-like element. As shown, the plate-like element 1 is in the form of an equilateral triangle, each side 5 of which is bevelled and provided with a hinged male lip 2 and a hinged female lip 3 having an aperture 4. In use each of the male lips snaps into the aperture of a female lip of another identically shaped construction element; this can be repeated many times, it being then possible to form open or closed spatial structures by folding adjacent construction elements along the hinges 6. The thickness of the lips preferably does not exceed half the thickness of the plate-like element 1. The elements are preferably made from polypropylene, high-density polyethylene or another crystalline thermoplastic polymer.
