Abstract

1434605 Measuring temperature W KUPPER [trading as HUBERT WEISSER KG] 8 June 1973 [12 June 1972] 27467/73 Headings G1D and G1X Apparatus for the detection and indication of specific temperatures of a roadway comprises probes each containing a plurality of thermometers arranged to sense differing air and ground temperatures and to actuate a warning indicator when the specific temperatures occur. As shown, probes 1 and 4 which are respectively buried in a roadway 2 and mounted on a post 3 adjacent the roadway. Each comprises a metal tube 9 housing mercury thermometers 5, 6, 7, 8 which are set to provide signals at specific different temperatures (e.g. +2‹C, 0‹C, -2‹C, -6‹C). The metal tube 9 of the probe 1 may be surrounded by copper plates 10, 11, 12, 13 which extend to the road surface 2 to assume the temperature thereof, the probes 1, 4 being connected to a remote indicator comprising separate warning lights to be actuated by different ones of the thermometers. The apparatus is used to indicate the onset of icing conditions on the roadway and provide a visual warning thereof.
