Abstract

1434214 Heat-treating magnetic alloys TSENTRAL NI INST CHERNOI METALLURGII IM IP BARDINA 9 April 1973 16966/73 Headings C7A and C7N An integral metal component one portion of which is magnetic and one portion non-magnetic is produced from an alloy which develops magnetic properties on ageing but loses them on high temperature tempering by heating that portion which is to be magnetic to 450-980‹C and soaking until magnetic properties are developed, followed by cooling. The non-magnetic portion is then heated to a temperature between 1000‹C and the melting point, and cooled at a rate sufficient to prevent development of magnetic properties. It may be advantageous to initially treat the whole workpiece to make it magnetic, followed by local treatment of those portions to be made non- magnetic. In a preferred embodiment those portions to be finally magnetic are initially heated t 1050-1350‹C and soaked to eliminate the effect of any previously applied treatments, followed by cooling and subsequent heating to develop magnetic properties. Cooling after the latter step may be a magnetic field. A preferred alloy contains, in percentage by wt-
