1434131 Die rolling XEROX CORP 18 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 28834/73 Heading B3M A profiled cylindrical roll 1, which may be used for applying liquid developer on to an electrostatically charged photoreceptive surface, is profiled by urging an impressing tool 2 into the roll while the roll is supported by a backing roll 3 having a resilient, abrasion resistant surface. The tool may impress a trihelicoid thread pattern into the roll having 180 t.p.i., 45 degrees lead, 0À0055 inch pitch, 0À001 inch top land, and 35 to 65 micron depth. The roll may be 1 inch diameter, 9 inches long (length), and the backing roll 3À5 inches diameter and 1À5 inches long. The material of the impressed roll may be aluminium alloy, low carbon steel, carbon and alloy-soft leaded steel, soft stainless steel, brass, copper, or copper base alloy. The backing roll may have a resilient shell on a metal core, the shell having a hardness from about 40 Shore A to 100 Shore D durometer. The material of the shell may be a mixture of diisocyanates and polyethers or polyesters mixed together and reacted with a curing agent. A list of suitable elastomeric compositions is disclosed, including polyurethane, polyisoprene, and polybutadiene. The impressing process is suitable for coating rolls as well as gravure printing cylinders.
