Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an increased hardness and an enhanced abrasion resistance to a printing shell surface, titanium carbide layer is formed on the printing shell surface of printing roll.
CONSTITUTION: A number of helical grooves 8 are provided in parallel on the peripheral surface 5 of a carbon steel printing roll 1. Then, titanium carbide layer 9 is formed on the peripheral surface 5 by ion-plating or other means. The presence of this titanium carbide layer 9 increases the hardness of the peripheral surface 5, contributing to an enhanced wear resistance of the printing roll 1.
