Couplings, non-automatic. - In a stowable coupling for railway trucks, &c., each end of the vehicle is provided with a slideway 2, Fig. 2, sloping towards the centre of the vehicle and forming a track for a member 5 which constitutes a counter-weight for, and is connected to, the coupling-hook 6 at the same end. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the slideway is formed of a single iron bar 2 along which slides a U-shaped link 3 pivotally connected to the member 5, which is in the form of a U-shaped rooking- beam having the hook 6 with integral link pivoted at its open end. In the uncoupled position, the member 5 slides downwards by gravity, and the coupling is stowed beneath the vehicle; in the coupled position as shown, the coupling is drawn upwardly and outwardly. The bar 2 may be attached by lugs at both ends to the vehicle 1, or, as shown in Fig. 6, by a lug at the rear end only, the forward end 8 passing upwardly through the bottom of the vehicle and being mortized so as to engage a forked rod 9 secured by a bolt 10 to the vehicle and to the rear end of the bar 2. The slideway may consist of two inclined bars, and the beam 5 be connected thereto either by a carriage running on rollers, or by a roller, or by a single bar, or by an arrangement of two or more bars. The bottom of the vehicle may be formed with a bulge 11 adapted to accommodate the sliding link 3 when the coupling is in its outward position.
