Abstract

1433570 Rotating hoops MONSANTO CO 10 June 1974 [11 June 1973] 25611/74 Addition to 1415790 Heading B3E Apparatus for rotating an annular bead 233, Fig. 3, comprises grippers (200). Fig. 1 (not shown), which include movable jaws 220 to exert gripping pressure on the bead, supports 204, 204a, for the grippers having a recessed curved track, a device for moving the grippers on an endless path into and out of engagement with the bead and a device 209 for separating the jaws to insert and remove the bead. The grippers are mounted on an endless chain 201, Fig. 2, driven by a drive shaft 202 and sprocket 202a. Track plates 204, 204a are attached to a spacer block 207, and rods 206 pass through the plates and exert damping pressure on the grippers through damping plates 205, 205a. The width between the clamping plates is adjustable by a nut 211 and bolt 212. The grippers are guided through a curved path conforming to an arc of the bead by a groove track in the plates 204, 204a. Springs 216 between the track plates and clamping plates provide a self-centering system for the plates. The grippers come together under the influence of pressure exerted by an air cylinder 209 on the plates 205, 205a, which overcomes the effect of compression spring 211. The grippers are moved apart by the moving apart of the plates 205, 205a by action of the air cylinder 209. The grippers are positioned on alternate sides of the chain to exert pressure at alternate areas on opposite sides of the bead surface. Each gripper has a neoprene insert 220 to grip the bead.
