Abstract
1433327 Matrix displays P J AXBEY 4 April 1973 [17 March 1972] 12546/72 Heading G5C [Also in Division H4] A display device, e.g. for television pictures, comprises a plurality of optic fibres 12 which terminate at one end 14 in a predetermined order, see Fig. 1 (not shown), to form a plane light-emitting surface 16, and at the other end 15 to form a light-receiving surface 20, and means 26 for controlling light emitted at 16 to synthesise the picture, and means 42 for varying the intensity of light emitted at 16. The fibres 12 are grouped in three bundles (18) each illuminated by a source 24 of one of the three primary colours, and the means 26, 42, the positions of which may be reversed, are variably scattering liquid crystals 28, 44 having transparent conductors 34, 36, 46, 48 to which suitable electric connection is made. The potential is applied to the cell 28 in a manner similar to the line and frame timebase of a conventional television receiver.
