Abstract

A liquid crystal display of alpha-numeric data is adapted to allow several colours to be programmably selected. The liquid crystal display element (4) consists of either seven segments (18) for a straight numerical display or fourteen if alphabetic characters are included. A front mask (2) has a number of apertures (16) corresponding in format to the display segments. A number of separate light sources (10, 12, 14) are selectively activated to illuminate the liquid crystal display element, via a diffuser plate (16).
