Abstract

1432944 Gas/liquid contact column HYDRONYL Ltd 30 April 1973 [9 May 1972 31 May 1972] 21520/72 and 25423/72 Heading B1R A distillation or absorption column comprises a vertically disposed cylinder and a plurality of horizontal gas/liquid contact trays with downcomers therebetween, the downcomers being in the form of a plate in engagement with the column inner wall, the lower edge of the or each plate being shaped so as to be generally curved in plan and/or elevation or alternatively providing the lower edge or edges with baffles so as to achieve a common residence time for liquid on the next lowermost tray. The lower edges of the plates which are curved in plan view preferably engage the column wall at a right angle and conform to an arc of a circle. In the embodiment in Fig. 7 (not shown) the general curvature in elevation of the plate is produced by a horizontal centre portion with two side portions extending upwardly. The lower part of the plate may contain a horizontal step portion or have an adjustable position to control the downunder flow clearance. The baffles 27 are preferably of aerofoil section.
