Abstract

1432765 Compressors and expanders DOLBY LABORATORIES Inc 30 April 1973 [2 May 1972] 26610/75 Divided out of 1432763 Heading H4R In compressors and expanders having a linear main path and a non-linear further path exhibiting limiting or conveying Specification 1,432,763 characteristics, these characteristics are respectively provided by a conveyer or a limiter in negative feedback or negative feedforward configurations relative to a parallel path. Fig. 12 shows a type 1 compressor having a linear main path 10 and a positive feedforward further path 12 with a limiter composed of a direct and a negative feedforward conveying path "CON", the filter 50 defining an operative passband. The gains of the two circuit paths in the further path 12 are the same at high signal level to produce cancellation, i.e. limiting, as opposed to reduction in type 3 compressors (Fig. 5a, not shown). Similarly the low level gains are the same in a conveyer formed of a negative feedforward limiter (Fig. 10, not shown). The loop gains are high in the remaining two configurations to effect cancellation as opposed to tucking in types 1 and 2 expanders.
