Abstract

1432703 Dispersing gases in liquids R C BRUMFIELD 7 June 1973 27238/73 Addition to 1419551 Heading B1C [Also in Division A5] A blood oxygenator comprises an array 50 of closely packed oxygen exchange tubes 5, a blood inlet reservoir communicating with the tubes 5 at one end of the array, an oxygen injector tube 7 projecting into each oxygen exchange tube 5 at the end of the array, from an oxygen inlet manifold 12, a defoaming chamber 21 coaxial with the array 50 for receiving oxygenated blood passing out of the other end of the array 50 and a blood filter 23 around the defoaming chamber 21. The array 50 may comprise a one-piece cylinder having parallel longitudinally extending passages separated by common walls, each passage having a constant cross-section, e.g. of triangular or hexagonal shape, and constituting an oxygen exchange tube (Figures 3A and 3B not shown). The heat exchange conduit 31 is coated with polyurethane film. Rigid plastics compositions which may be used for the other components are referred to.
