Abstract
1432637 Sulphurized esters INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE 30 Oct 1973 [3 Nov 1972 1 Dec 1972] 50393/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Sulphurized ester additives for lubricating oil are prepared by totally esterifying or transesterifying at least one aliphatic monocarboxylic or dicarboxylic acid, or derivative thereof which is capable of undergoing esterification or transesterification, with at least one ethylenically unsaturated branched chain aliphatic monohydric alcohol containing at least 8 carbon atoms per molecule, the ethylenically unsaturated alcohol being used optionally in admixture with a minor proportion of at least one saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohol; and sulphurizing the ester product. Preferred unsaturated alcohols are those prepared by condensing formaldehyde with a C 8 -C 20 branched chain monoolefin such as propylene or isobutylene oligomers, and C 8 -C 24 alcohols prepared by reduction of the aldehyde group of an α,#-unsaturated branched-chain aliphatic aldehyde by aldolization-crotonization of at least one aliphatic aldehyde having the formula in which R is a straight-chain saturated alkyl radical and X is H or a straight-chain saturated alkyl radical. Sulphurization by heating with elemental sulphur in the presence of zinc oxide or a secondary amine and the product may be reacted with a small proportion of P 4 S 3 . Unsaturated branched chain alcohols are prepared by reacting paraformaldehyde in glacial acetic acid with propylene trimer or tetramer and with isobutene dimer, and by hydrogenation of the aldehyde group of α,#-unsaturated aldehydes prepared by aldol condensation of n-heptanal, n-butanal, a mixture comprising n-hexanal, n-heptanal, n-octanal, 2-methylpentanal, 2-methylhexanal and 2-methylheptanal, and a mixture comprising n-nonanal, n-decanal, 2-methyloctanal and 2-methylnonanal, these mixtures being derived from the oxo process on C 5 -C 7 and C 8 -C 9 α-olefins respectively. Esters are prepared from the above alcohols, in some cases along with 2-ethylhexanol, isononanol, n-heptanol or a mixture of n-hexanol., n-octanol and n-decanol, using variously oleic, adipic, dodecanedioic, isononanedioic, azelaic or nonanoic acids, tall oil fatty acids and maleic anhydride.
