Abstract

1432635 Melting glass batch CORNING GLASS WORKS 20 Aug 1973 [28 Aug 1972] 39312/73 Heading C1M [Also in Division F4] In the melting and refining of glass in which batch 18 is introduced into a melting tank (10) holding molten glass 20, so as to cover substantially completely the upper part thereof; heat energy as from electrodes 34 is applied about the periphery of the tank 10 at a plurality of heights to melt the batch in an upper melting zone and to refine the molten glass in a lower refining zone and in which the refined melt is withdrawn below the refining zone, gas under pressure is continuously introduced in the peripheral area of the melting zone so as to form a plurality of bubbles 58 or continuous streams from the gas and the bubbles 58 or streams are directed upwardly to form passages 62 through the molten glass to prevent bridging of the batch 18 within the tank. As shown, gas is. introduced through gas supply tubes 48 equally spaced round and extending through the sidewall 14a and/or 14b of the tank 10 into the peripheral area of the molten glass 20, wall segments 14a being electrode-containing and segments 14b being non-powered. Each tube 48 is provided with a flow meter (54) and control valve (56) and preferably all tubes 48 are connected to a single distributor pipe. The gas, which may be air, nitrogen or carbon dioxide, is at slightly greater pressure than the pressure of the molten glass at the end 52 of each tube 48. Specifications 1,260,225 and 1,353,070 are referred to.
