Abstract
1431899 Packages IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 April 1973 [9 Aug 1972] 37152/72 Heading B8C [Also in Divisions B2 and B5] A plastics film pouch for holding carbonated beverages, is closed except at a filling opening by gas-tight seals in which inner surfaces of the pouch are heat-sealed together, and is formed of biaxially oriented tubular film of polyethylene terephthalate internally coated with a copolyester containing residues of both ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid and residues of a dicarboxylic acid other than terephthalic acid and/or of a glycol other than ethylene glycol, the copolyester being obtainable by reacting a mixture of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol containing also:- (a) one or more dicarboxylic acids other than terephthalic acid in an amount of from 0 to 25 mol. per cent of total acid present (preferably 10 to 20 mol. per cent); and/or (b) one or more glycols other than ethylene glycol in an amount of from 0 to 50 mol. per cent of total glycol present: provided that, when the amount of said other acid is less than 1 mol. percent of total acid present, an amount of glycol or glycols other than ethylene glycol is present, this amount being at least 10 mol. per cent of the total glycol present. In the preferred method, the copolyester and the polyethylene terephthalate are coextruded in the initial production of the tubular films, which is then biaxially oriented. The wall of the biaxially oriented tubular film may be from 0À00075 to 0À0175 inch thick and the internal coating thereon may be from 0À00004 to 0À0004 inch thick. In the example a copolyester obtained from ethylene glycol and a mixture of terephthalic and isophthalic acids containing 13 mol. per cent of isophthalic acid is used. Pouches so made, may be readily heat-sealed at temperatures of 190 to 140 C. as in Specification 1,302,450. A package may be made by sealing the filling aperture after filling, as in Specification 1,302,450.
