Abstract
1431796 Moulding ribbed tubes DAYCO CORP 19 June 1973 [3 July 1972] 29042/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] A continuously moulded elastomeric hose, Fig. 2, comprises a wall of solid section defined by an inner tubular layer having a circular interior surface 13 and external annular, or a helical rib 14 fused thereto and of a material which is harder than that of the tubular layer, e.g. of substantially twice the hardness. The rib or ribs may comprise a material having a Shore durometer hardness of between 80 and 100 on the"A" scale, with the hardness of the material of the tubular layer being between 40 and 60. The ribs may be partially embedded in the tubular wall, e.g. as at 20. The materials may be thermoplastic, thermosetting, or natural or synthetic rubber. The hose is formed by delivering the material into a cavity defined between a pair of moulding devices 23, each comprising mould halves 26 which are pivotally interconnected at 27 and move along an endless path. For forming the Fig. 2 hose, the material comprising the ribs 14 is delivered from one extrusion source 45 to be injected, via a passage 46 and annular outlet 50 of an extruder mandrel 38, into annular rib defining grooves 33, formed in an interior surface 31 of the mould halves which slide along an exterior surface 51 of the mandrel. The material comprising the tubular wall 12 is delivered from another extrusion source 36, via a mandrel passage 37 and spider 44, to be extruded into fusing intermingling contact with the rib material, at an annular outlet 42 of the mandrel. Downstream of the outlet 42 the mandrel exterior surface 43 is spaced from the mould halves surface 31 to define the thickness of the tubular wall 12. To avoid heat loss from the material, thermally insulating sleeves 59, 63, 57 are detachably fastened to the apparatus. For producing the Fig. 3 tube (not shown), the mould halves define a single helical groove (33A), Fig. 5 (not shown). The extruded tube may pass from between the mould halves, through a cutter, to a wind-up mechanism.
