Abstract

1431607 Sealing liquid crystal cells with cyanoacrylates DAI NIPPON TORYO KK 27 Dec 1973 [30 Dec 1972 10 July 1973] 59723/73 Heading C3P A liquid crystal cell formed by two planar supports interconnected by and spaced apart by a spacer and having at least one opening for introducing a liquid crystal material has introduced therein through one such opening a liquid crystal material and the opening or openings are sealed with a cyanoacrylate of the formula where R is a hydrocarbon radical which cures to form an insoluble film at the boundary with the liquid crystal material. The liquid crystal material may have the formula where X is CH=N, N=N, N=N#*O, CH=N#O, CH=CH, CH=CC1, CO 2 , or C#C and Y 1 and Y 2 are each a CN, R, OR, COR, OCOOR, or OCOR radical where R is H or hydrocarbon and may contain at least one aliphatic or aromatic amine, nitro compound or hydroxyl containing compound which aid the curing of the cyanoacrylate. In the examples ethyl cyanoacrylate is used to seal cells containing (a) a mixture of p-methoxybenzylidenep<SP>1</SP>-butyl aniline and p-ethoxybenzylidene-p1- butyl aniline or (b) a mixture of p-butoxy-p<SP>1</SP>-n. hexyl-α-chlorostilbene and aniline.
