The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or alkylmercapto group, R1 is an alkyl, alkenyl, chloroalkyl, alkoxy or aryloxy group, or the group -NR11R111 where R11 is hydrogen or an alkyl or alkoxy group and R111 is an alkyl or alkenyl group. The compounds are prepared by reacting a 5-amino-1,3,4- thiadiazole of the formula with (a) an isocyanate R111NCO, (b) an acid halide R11R111NCOHal in the presence of an acid binder, (c) an acid halide R1CO.Hal, in the presence of an acid binder, provided that R1 is not -NR11R111, or (d) an anhydride R1CO.O. CO.R1, provided that R1 is not -NR11R111. A large number of 5-acylamino-1,3,4-thiazoles is disclosed. The compounds are used as herbicides (see Division A5).
