Abstract
1431570 Treated carbon fibres and composites thereof RHONE-PROGIL 30 May 1973 [31 May 1972] 25723/73 Heading ClA [Also in Division C3] Carbon fibres are modified by being coated with a sizing solution containing an elastomeric epoxy resin. Before being so coated the fibres may be subjected to a two stage electrochemical treatment, first by electrolysing an aqueous solution with the carbon fibres as the anode, and second by electrolysing the same or similar aqueous solution with carbon as cathode. Preferred epoxy resins are obtained by condensing a diglycidyl ether of a bisphenol with a poly(dicarboxylic) ester. The ester may have been obtained by the reaction of one or more of phthalic, maleic, sebacic, adipic or oleic acids or polymerized fatty acids with one or more of ethylene glycol, propane diol, butane diol, pentane diol, or hexane diol. The fibres so obtained may be used as reinforcement in a composite material comprising said carbon fibres in a matrix of an organic macromolecular compound. The matrix may be a thermosetting resin or mixture of such resins and is preferably obtained by curing a mixture of epoxy resin, curing agent and accelerator. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,195,219.
