Abstract
1431124 Expanding tobacco leaf PHILIP MORRIS INC 10 Jan 1974 [22 Jan 1973] 01254/74 Heading A2C Tobacco leaf is treated with an aqueous liquid to provide 20-60% by weight before it is introduced to a zone containing water vapour at a relative humidity of at least 40% where it is subjected to a microwave field to vapourise the water and expand the tobacco leaf. The aqueous liquid may be water or a salt solution e.g. sodium chloride solution. The microwave field may be generated at a frequency of 915 to 22000 MHz of a power density between 0.1 and 2.5 Kw. Improved microwave effects can be achieved with salts which improve smoking characteristics e.g. Na, K, Ca or Mg alkates, acetates and sulphates. Aqueous ammonia may also be used.
