Abstract

1431086 Foam glass panel SAINT-GOBAIN INDUSTRIES 18 Oct 1973 [20 Oct 1972] 48498/73 Heading C1M A panel comprising a layer of cellular glass covering at least one surface of a sheet of glass ceramic is produced by coating a sheet of glassceramic or a glass capable of being converted thereto by heat with a mixture capable of producing a cellular glass on heating and heating the coated sheet in a closed mould to expand the mixture into cellular glass and, if necessary convert the glass of the sheet into a glassceramic. The mixture is sufficient to occupy a volume after expansion at ambient temperature at least 10 % greater than the volume required to fill the mould. Preferably the mixture has an average grain size of from 50 to 80 Á. The sheet may be sprinkled with a thin layer of glass powder having a relatively coarse grain size, which is then covered with the finer grained mixture. The mixture preferably comprises a glass having a composition in weight per cent of SiO 2 55-65; CaO 6-11; MgO 3-6; alkali metal oxides 13-15; Al 2 O 3 10-14 and 1 to 2 parts by weight of CaCO 3 per 100 parts by weight of glass.
