Abstract

1430763 Non-inflatable tyres RALEIGH INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 March 1973 [24 March 1972] 13859/72 Heading B7C [Also in Division B5]. A hollow non-inflatable tyre in the form of a one-piece moulding of resilient material comprises a tread portion 23, a pair of sidewalls 25, a wheel engaging portion 27 having two separable but interengaging parts each continuous with a respective sidewall, and, internally of the tyre at each side thereof, a single series of like integral ribs 31 which are substantially regularly spaced circumferentially of the tyre and extend inwardly of the tyre in such manner as to provide greater reinforcement to the sidewalls than to the central part of the tread portion so that, in use, the tyre will flex preferentially in the central part of the tread portion. The ribs 31 of one series may be aligned, or staggered, with respect to those of the other series, and in each series the ratio of rib spacing to thickness may be 6. The tyre may be mounted in use on a wheel rim such as that 29 shown in Fig. 2, and the portion 27 may have shoulders 28 shaped to seat on flanges 30 of the rim. The interior surface of the tread portion 23 may have a central circumferential groove 32 to facilitate fitting of the tyre on the rim, a method of the tyre fitting being described in the Specification (see Fig. 4, not shown). The contacting surfaces 33, 34 of the two parts of the portion 27 may be of interfitting V-shape and, like the sides of the groove 32, may be coated with adhesive so as to become adhered together when the tyre has been mounted on the rim. The interior cavity of the tyre may be filled with foam plastics, e.g. through an aperture 36 in one sidewall, when the tyre has been fitted to the rim. The tyre shown in Fig. 2 may be moulded in the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 which consists of two annular halves 10, 11 which define the outer contour of the tyre, and a core 16 which by means of spaces between lugs 20 defines the ribs 31, and also defines the groove 32 by means of a projection 19, and the V-shaped surfaces 33, 34 by means of a projection 17 and recess 18, respectively.
