Abstract

1430533 Administering medicines ABBOT LABORATORIES 3 Jan 1974 00271/74 Heading A5R A drug supporting anchor 20 for insertion and retention in body cavities comprises a helical elongated member 24 with a drug supporting surface comprising a longitudinal channel 26 in its outer surface retaining a strip 30 of slow release drug material by means of projections 32 on the strip engaging spaced apertures 28 in the channel. The elongated member may alternatively comprise a solid cylindrical rod or hollow tube formed into a helix (Figs. 7, 12-not shown), or a double helix (Fig. 11- not shown). Alternatively, the elongated member may comprise a solid cylindrical rod with raised helical lands defining the drug supporting surface (Figs. 4, 5-not shown) to which a drug strip may be secured. In Fig. 14 an anchor 84 consists of a flat strip of flexible material, which may be of stainless or high carbon steel, wound into a helix and supported on an insertion rod 94, engaging the distal end 92 thereof by means of a shaped end 90 and the proximal end thereof by means of a pin 98 on the rod entering an aperture 88 in the strip, the rod being extendable to longitudinally stretch and reduce the diameter of the anchor to facilitate insertion in a body cavity. In Fig. 16 the anchor consists of a flat strip 102 of resilient flexible material having triangular end portions 108, 110 wound in helical formation on an insertion rod 124 and releasably secured thereto by retractable pins 126, 128 on the rod engaging apertures 120, 122 in the strip. The anchor may be formed wfrom plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, ethylene/propylene copolymers, transparent acrylic resins, polycarbonates or linear polyamides or from stainless or high carbon steel. The slow release drug may alternatively be directly applied to the drug supporting surface by dipping the anchor in a solution of the drug and a silicone rubber slow release carrier dissolved in cyclohexane and subsequently evaporating the solvent (Fig. 9-not shown).
