Abstract

1,181,037. Disposable hypodermic syringe. J. GLOVER LABORATORIES PTY. Ltd. 31 May, 1968, No. 26297/68. Heading A5R. A disposable hypodermic syringe (a particular form of which is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 which show, respectively, the syringe packed in assembled state for sale, and the syringe in use) comprises a tubular body member 1 moulded in plastics material (e.g. polypropylene) and having one end 5 open while the other end 6 has a double-ended hypodermic needle 7 fitted into it with the inner end 8 of said needle projecting into the interior of the body member, an injection-holding cartridge of glass 2 accommodated in said tubular body and having a puncturable diaphragm 10 at its inner end, the cartridge being moveable longitudinally relatively to the needle for puncturing of the diaphragm by the inner end of the needle, and a slidable plunger 12 to eject the injection, and a needle sheath 3 of plastics material fitted to said other end 6 of the body member to seal the needle aseptically and adapted, when removed (see Fig. 2), to have one end thereof inserted into the end of the cartridge opposite to said inner end thereof to slide the plunger to eject the injection after the diaphragm of the cartridge has been punctured by the inner end of the needle. Preferably, said sheath end is so constructed that its connects with the plunger in such manner as to enable the plunger to be retracted for aspiration purposes prior to injection. Preferably, also, the inner surface of the body member is provided with one or more annular ribs or rings 15 which serve to form a bacteriological seal for the inner end of the needle and to hold the cartridge in position prior to puncture of the diaphragm. Also, the inner surface of the sheath may be provided with one or more annular ribs or rings 18 to provide a bacteriological seal for the outer end 17 of the needle. In another preferred embodiment, the outer end of the sheath is formed with a projecting neck 19 surmounted with a pointed or conical shaped enlarged head 20 adapted to coact with hole 13 and enlarged internal chamber 14 (shown in Fig. 3) in the plunger 12.
