Abstract

1430511 Heat treatment and sulphonation of waste tyres NITTAN CO Ltd 8 July 1974 [29 Oct 1973] 30088/74 Heading C3E A cation exchanger is manufactured by heattreating chopped, crushed or powdered waste tyre and subsequently sulphonating or chlorosulphonating said waste tyre. The tyre may be crushed and formed into discrete shapes with a binder before or after the heat-treating step. Examples are given in which (a) chopped or crushed waste tyre is heated to a temperature in the range 170‹ to 350‹ C. in air or nitrogen, cooled and reacted with silver sulphate and sulphuric acid, fuming sulphuric acid containing sulphuric anhydride or sulphuric anhydride in dichloroethane; (b) crushed waste tyre is mixed with SBR latex and formed into balls, which are heated to 240‹ C. in nitrogen, cooled and treated with chlorosulphonic acid and (c) crushed waste tyre is heated to 270‹ C. in nitrogen, mixed with a xylene solution of SBR and formed into a film, which is treated with sulphuric anhydride in dichloroethane.
