Abstract

1430187 Saw blade construction STORA KOPPARBERGS BERGSLAGS AB 17 April 1973 [20 April 1972 26 Sept 1972] 18566/73 Heading B5L [Also in Division B3] Saw blade stock comprises a composite strip consisting of a flexible steel backing strip joined edge to edge with a tooth strip of cutting tool steel, the joint extending across said edges and having a fine grain obtained as a result of dimensional reduction by heat working. The stock may be used for hack or band saw blades with the teeth being formed in at least the cutting tool strip by cutting and grinding or by milling. To product the stock, pieces 1 of the backing strip steel are placed vertically in spaced parallel relation and the sides and bottom of the space 2 between them are closed by steel plates or water-cooled jackets 3, 4 and a plug 5. Consumable electrodes 6, 7 are then placed in the space 2 and current applied to melt the electrodes so that drops therefrom form a molten bath 11 which sets into an ingot 12. The heat produced also causes some of the material of the plates 1 to melt and alloy into the ingot 12 so that it is of the desired cutting tool steel formula. The ends of the electrodes, the drops, and the bath 11 are protected from the atmosphere by a melted slag 8, or by an inert gas, such as nitrogen or CO 2 . The three part billet produced is hot rolled, annealed, cold rolled, and annealed to form a strip having a breadth at least double that of the saw blade stock, and its central cutting tooth steel portion is then divided longitudinally before forming into saw blades.
