1299640 Abrasive tools EISHEN KK 4 Sept 1970 42616/70 Heading B3D [Also in Division C7] A saw blade, e.g. for a band saw comprises a strip 2 of carbon tool steel to one longitudinal edge of which a plurality of hard flinders 5 are brazed by means of hard solder 6. The flinders may consist of crushed material, which material comprises melted and moulded silicon dioxides or comprises moulded and sintered powdery constituents, of ceramics predominantly containing aluminium oxides, or of alloys. The alloys may be those predominantly containing tungsten carbides, or alloys of multicarbides containing major portions of tungsten carbides and minor portions of titanium and/or tantalum carbides, or alloys of carbides predominantly containing tantalum and/or vanadium carbides. In an example an alloy made by moulding and sintering a mixture consisting by weight of 92% tungsten carbide, 2% of titanium and tantalum carbides, and 6% of cabalt, each in powder form was heated to about 1100‹ C., quenched to about -70‹ C. and crushed into flinders by a hammer. A strip of tool steel containing 0À8-0À9% carbon was heated along one edge to around 600‹ C. Flux melted at 950‹ to 1000‹ C. was applied to the heated edge, and hard solder predominantly containing nickel and melted at 1300‹ C. was flowed on to the edge. The flinders were dropped at random into the molten solder. The effective width of the cutting edge formed was 1À3 to 1À7 times the thickness of the strip.
