Abstract

1429835 Foamed ethylene polymers BASF AG 1 Aug 1973 [2 Aug 1972] 36516/73 Heading C3C A foamed ethylene polymer is produced by mixing an ethylene polymer with a solid, gasliberating expanding agent and a cross-linking agent, heating the mixture in a mould to a temperature above the decomposition point of the expanding agent and above the decomposition point of the cross-linking agent, cooling the resulting expandable melt under pressure to a temperature below the solidification point of the melt and expanding the foamable material at a temperature above the crystallite melting point of the ethylene polymer, wherein the heating of the mixture of ethylene polymer, gas-liberating expanding agent and cross-linking agent is carried out in a pressure vessel under the pressure of an inert gas which is higher than the pressure produced by decomposition of the gas-liberating expanding agent. The inert gas pressure is at least 25 atm. and kept constant during heating and subsequent cooling of the expandable melt. Examples are given in which mixtures comprising (a) ethylene/n-butyl acrylate copolymer, azodicarbonamide, zinc stearate and 1,3 - bis - (t - butylperoxyisopropyl)- benzene or (b) polyethylene, polyisobutylene, zinc stearate, dicumyl peroxide and N,N<SP>1</SP>- dinitroso-N,N<SP>1</SP>-dimethylterephthalamide are formed into panels in a mould with heating, pieces of the panels then being placed in a tray in a vessel pressurized with nitrogen and heating. After cooling, the resulting boards are heated in a drying cabinet.
