Abstract

Air and gases, moistening, washing, absorbing, and otherwise treating with liquids; liquids, treating with gases. - Apparatus for treating gases with liquids, and vice versa, has disks a comprising helically twisted strip wound around the axis of the disk. The strip is usually wound between radial arms and a rim afterwards fixed to retain the strip and, in rotary machines. make a running joint with baffles c of flat, conical, or vena-contracted formation. The strip may, however, be arranged on flat strips b<3>, Fig. 5, wound in volute form on a hub, the strip b<3> being grooved or channelled to retain the twisted &c. strip and to lift liquid from the bottom of the casing c towards the shaft d; or the strip b may be threaded over the radial arms a<1>, Fig. 9, so as to give an increased contact surface. A fan e, Fig. 1, propels the gas through the machine, and eliminators f remove excess humidity therefrom. In a modification, the disks a are arranged horizontally, and liquid is supplied thereto from troughs; either the trough or the disks may rotate, or both may be stationary. The use of corrugated strip is also referred to.
