Abstract
1429053 Acetals of benzoin compounds BASF AG 27 June 1973 [1 July 1972] 30629/73 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions G2 and C3] The invention comprises an acetal of a benzoin compound of general formula: where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are H, C 1 to C 4 alkyl, C 1 to C 4 alkoxy or Cl, R<SP>3</SP> is H, CH 3 , OCH 3 , CH 2 OR<SP>5</SP> or CH 2 X, R<SP>4</SP> is X or OR<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>5</SP> is C 1 to C 6 alkyl, and which contains at least one acetal group in the radical R<SP>3</SP> or R<SP>4</SP>, Y being CH 3 and Z being C 2 to C 4 alkyl or Y and Z together being 1,3- alkylene or 1,4-alkylene of 3 or 4 carbon atoms, which are optionally substituted by C 1 to C 4 alkoxy. The acetals may be prepared by reacting an α- or #-hydroxyketone of the formula in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are as above, R<SP>3'</SP> is H, CH 2 OH, alkyl, alkoxy or alkoxymethyl, and R<SP>4'</SP> is alkyl, with an α,#-olefinically unsaturated ether in an aprotic solvent or in the liquid phase in the absence of a solvent, in the presence of an acid catalyst, at a temperature of from -10‹ to + 100‹ C. Suitable acid catalysts are cone. sulphuric acid, boron trifluoride etherate and p-toluenesulphonic acid. Exemplified ethers are vinyl alkyl ethers and cyclic ethers of the formulae in which R is H or alkoxy.
