1428967 Tyre fitting apparatus DUNLOP Ltd 27 April 1973 [3 May 1972] 20505/72 Heading B7C Apparatus for fitting a tyre, e.g. a solid tyre, to a wheel rim comprises a press (not shown) having upper and lower platens, and a frame 1 on which a plurality of pressure transmitting members 2 are adjustably mounted, each member 2 having an upper platen engaging surface and a tyre engaging surface 14 whereby, in use, it transmits pressure from the upper platen to a tyre resting on a rim placed on the lower platen to force the tyre on to the rim. The apparatus may be used in fitting a tyre to a rim having a detachable flange, in which case the surface 14 of the members 2 may engage the flange, which is located to rest on the tyre, rather than contacting the tyre directly. In the illustrated embodiment the frame 1 comprises a plurality of arms 4 welded to a plate 5 to radiate from a central spigot (16) (Fig. 4, not shown) on the plate, the spigot being passed through an aperture in the upper platen and connected to a plate of larger dimensions than the aperture such that when the press is open the frame hangs from the upper platen. Each member 2 is formed from a plate 6 providing the upper platen engaging surface, plates 12, and an arcuate plate 13 providing the tyre engaging surface, and is slidably mounted on a respective arm 4, to enable the apparatus to accommodate tyres of different sizes, by means of a tube 7 fitted with a spring- loaded plunger 8 engageable with holes 9 in the arm to secure the member in different positions. The plungers 8 may be replaced by screws bearing on the arms and locating stops 15 may be provided on the surface 14 of each member 2.
