Abstract
1428271 Hydroxylation of aromatic compounds RHONE-POULENC SA 26 June 1973 [27 June 1972] 30371/73 Heading C2C Aromatic compounds of the Formula I in which R and R<SP>1</SP> are hydrogen or C 1 -C 4 alkyl radicals, are hydroxylated by treating with performic acid, which is formed in situ from hydrogen peroxide and formic acid, in the presence of an inorganic or organic acid with a pk H2O greater than - 0À1 but not greater than 2, the molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to formic acid being greater than 2 : 1 and the degree of conversion of the aromatic compound being not more than 30%. Suitable acids having the specified pk H2O are, for example, pyrophosphoric acid, trifluoroacetic acid and picric acid. Where the acid does not contain phosphorus a complexing agent, e.g. orthophosphoric and its acid esters may be present. Examples describe the conversion of phenol to pyrocatechol and a lesser amount of hydroquinol.
