Abstract

1428153 Ultrasonic inspection apparatus; ultrasonic probes BRITISH STEEL CORP 6 Sept 1974 [7 Sept 1973] 42241/73 Headings H4D and H4J A test piece, e.g. a rolled steel plate 21, is passed relatively, e.g. by rollers 20, to the ultrasonic beam produced by a plurality of ultrasonic transducers 30 arranged on a beam 25, arranged for axial reciprocation transversely of the direction of test piece relative movement, by pneumatic means 27, in a reservoir 10 of water in which the beam is situated with neutral or positive buoyancy, the water being maintained in contact with the test piece to act as a coupling medium. The transducers are connected by wires 31, running through beam 25 which is a stainless steel tube passing through watertight seals 26 in the reservoir tank 26, wires 31 being fed to ultrasonic control unit 32 of known type. Water is passed into the tank through ducts 11 fed from pipe 12, and passes out through aperture 15 to flood the adjacent area 22 of test piece 21, and may be recycled. Transducers 30 are mounted in a watertight duct 29 mounted in streamlined fashion on tube 25. In other embodiments, the test piece, e.g. a flexible steel sheet may be passed directly through the reservoir and the beam 25 arranged to float thereabove with the transducers pointing downwards, and a tube may be tested by rotating it, mounted above, and lengthwise along aperture 15.
