Abstract
1428045 Engraving by radiant energy beams; making printing members EUROPEAN ROTOGRAVURE ASSOCIATION 28 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 40538/73 Headings B3V and B3A A printing member D is engraved by irradiating it through a mask M, the proportion of radiation transmitted at any point by the mask M being dependent upon the tone of a corresponding point on an original picture, so that cavities are produced in the member D whose surface area and/or depth correspond to the tones of the original picture. The energy beam used has a constant energy and frequency. The mask M may comprise a supporting layer of glass or plastics permeable to the energy beam from a carbon dioxide laser source and a layer of aluminium, magnesium or silver which includes areas a-f having progressively less reflectivity so that progressively deeper cavities are formed in the printing member D by the laser beam. The remainder of the mask layer comprises areas g which are fully reflecting so as to prevent the passage of the beam to the surface of the member D. The cross-section of the beam is a multiple of the surface area of the largest cavity to be formed. The mask M may alternatively be mounted directly on the member D. The printing member D may be in the form of a rotogravure cylinder which is rotated whilst the laser beam is moved along paths parallel to the cylinder axis. The cylinder may be scanned with two or more energy beams.
