Abstract

1427971 Retractive switches; switch contacts WILD ROVER CORP 12 Feb 1973 6718/73 Heading H1N A retractive switch comprises an open-ended housing 22 closed at one end by a base 28 mounting fixed contacts 30, 32 and at the other end by an actuating element 24 and contains a movable contact element 26 having three integral resilient leg portions 26b, 26c, 26d which are maintained in compressive stress between the inner surface of the base and a protruberance 24c of the actuating element 24 when the switch is in an unactuated condition. The leg portions include respective feet portions 26e, 26f, 26g which are dimpled to reduce friction when the leg portions are flexed about attachment regions 26j, 26k, 26m and they exhibit polar symmetry about a generally circular central portion 26a by being equi-angularly spaced at 120 degrees with each leg portion extending arcuately to subtend an angle of approximately 90 degrees. Straight contact members 26h in the form of wires affixed to the central portion 26a either directly or via an intervening plate 26i, or comprising embossed portions of the central area are orientated to extend parallel to a line between the centre of 26a and one of the feet portions in order to avoid unbalanced movement of the contact element 26 or incomplete bridging of the fixed contacts 30, 32 when the switch is actuated by means of a force, in excess of the threshold value required to overcome the initial compressive stress of the contact element, is applied to the central portion 26a via the protuberance 24c of the actuating element 24. Representative force/ deflection characteristics are analysed with reference to diagram Fig. 6A (not shown). Alternative forms of leg portion construction for the beryllium copper contact element and various materials suitable for the contact members 26h are detailed.
