Abstract
1427847 Rolling tubes AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORISATION DE LA RECHERCHE 22 May 1973 [26 May 1972] 24463/73 Heading B3M A machine for reducing the diameter of a tubular workpiece 23, Fig. 2 or for forming splines on a workpiece, Fig. 4, includes a number of sectors 1 surrounding the workpiece, the sectors being oscillated about their pivotal axes by piston-rods 8 and being guided adjacent the working zone by a slotted guide ring 14 (Fig. 3). In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the workpiece is supported on a mandrel 24 having a pilot portion 20 coupled to an extension sleeve 21. The pilot portion is oscillated by an hydraulically operated piston 41 acting on the sleeve. The mandrel 24 is oscillated in synchronism with the sectors to feed the tube forwardly. For this purpose, the mandrel is coupled by links 29 to the piston-rods 8, stops 53 and 36 limiting the movement of the mandrel. The mandrel is also caused to rotate slightly during feeding by the co-operation of a helically splined part 54 of the mandrel with a nut 46 which is connected to the links 29. The rotation only takes place when the springs 43 are compressed due to the mandrel contacting one of the stops at the end of its travel. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4, the workpiece 23 is clamped to a mandrel 25 which is oscillated by links 29. The mandrel and workpiece are fed in a step by step manner by the use of two clamps 58 and 59 which alternately grip and release the mandrel.
