Abstract

1427579 Printed circuits KOLLMORGEN CORP 12 July 1973 [11 July 1972] 33231/73 Heading H1R Printed circuits are produced by (1) coating the surface of a transfer base material with a layer of a liquid resin composition which is hardenable by polymerization or cross-linking, (2) partially hardening the composition to a degree which allows storing the coated transfer base material without adjacent surfaces adhering to each other, (3) subsequently bringing the partially hardened coated surface of the transfer base material into close contact with the surface of a permanent support material, (4) completing the hardening of the coating layer, (5) removing the transfer base material, (6) treating the resinous coating layer to be microporous and/or wettable and (7) forming the metal conductor pattern on the resinous surface. The transfer base may be a sheet, film or foil of plastics-or metal coated paper, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, polyalkylene terephthalate, polytetrafluoroethylene, aluminium, copper or tin. Preferred resin compositions comprise phenolics, polyepoxides, melamines, polyacrylics, polyacrylates, polyesters, nitrile rubber, polystyrene and mixtures thereof. The permanent support may itself be hardened simultaneously with the resin layer before removal of the transfer base. Microporosity and wettability may be produced by treating with dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, or toluene-water mixture, then with chloric acid-sulphuric acid and then with a reducing agent, e.g. sodium bisulphite. Alternatively the resin composition may contain particles which are degraded on treatment with chromic acid or permanganate solution. The composition may also contain particles of a material catalytic to the electroless deposition of metal, e.g. palladium, gold, platinum, copper, palladium chloride, gold chloride, platinum chloride, copper oxide and stannous chloride. In a typical example a layer of rubber composition comprising a nitrile rubber solid, nitrile rubber liquid, thermosetting phenolic resin, epoxy resin and fumed silica is roller coated on to polyethylene coated paper, dried and sheets of the resulting product are stacked with a plurality of phenolic-paper or glass-epoxy prepreg sheets. The composite is laminated and panels cut from the laminate processed into printed circuit boards by (1) producing any required hole pattern, (2) peeling off the transfer base, (3) activating with potassium dichromate-sulphuric acid-water mixture, (4) sensitizing with SnCl 2 -hydrochloric acid-water mixture followed by treatment with PdCl 2 - hydrochloric acid-water mixture, (5) drying and applying a resist and (6) electrolessly depositing copper, stripping the resist and curing the resulting circuit board.
