Abstract
1427348 Removing metal electro-deposits from cathode plates IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd and IMI REFINERS Ltd 24 July 1973 [14 Aug 1972] 37805/72 Heading C7B Removal of a metal electro-deposit e.g. of Zn, Cu or Ni from a flat cathode plate of a metal having a dissimilar coefficient of thermal expansion e.g. Ti, Al or stainless steel is achieved or facilitated by subjecting the deposit and plate to a temperature change whereby the differential contraction or expansion forces generated weaken adhesion of the deposit. The deposit, from an electrolytic bath at e.g. 60-70‹C, may be rinsed in a bath at the same temperature followed by quenching in cold air, water or using solid CO 2 . Alternatively the temperature change may be achieved by heating e.g. in boiling water. A temperature change of about 60 C is preferred. A repeated heating/cooling (or vice versa) cycle may be used. The cathode plate may have a non- conductive mask along at least one edge and its lower edge may bear a longitudinal V-shaped groove.
