Abstract

1427094 Textile softeners HOECHST AG 2 March 1973 [2 March 1972] 10291/73 Heading D1P A tetrahydropyrimidimium compound of the general formula I in which R represents an alkyl or alkenyl radical (7-21C), R 1 represents an alkyl or alkenyl radical (8-22C) or an amido propyl radical at least one of the radicals represented by R 1 and R containing more than 14C, R 2 represents an alkyl radical, preferably methyl or ethyl, and A- represents a salt-forming anion, preferably Cl<SP>-</SP> or R 2 OSO 3 <SP>-</SP>, finds utility as a softening agent for textile fibres or material. The compound I may be formulated as a fluid concentrate containing 50-80%, preferably 60- 75% by weight of I in a polar organic solvent such as a lower aliphatic alcohol or glycol, or an aqueous solution or dispersion containing 1-30%, preferably 4-10% by weight of I and optionally also 0.3-30% by weight of a polar organic solvent. The formulation may further contain one or more additives selected from cationic and non-ionogenic surfactants, electrolytes, organic complex formers, optical brighteners and solubilisers. For treating textiles, the compound I is preferably added to the last rinse after washing, at a goods toliquor ratio of 1:5 to 1:10, and at a concentration of from 0.02 to 1.5 grams per litre of the rinsing bath. Alternatively, textiles may be impregnated with the compound I by immersion in or spraying with aqueous solutions or dispersions thereof to leave from 0.01 to 0.7% preferably from 0.05 to 0.2% of compound I based on the weight of the textile. Textiles which may be treated include those of native or regenerated cellulose (terry towelling is exemplified). cellulose acetate and triacetate. wool, polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, polyester and polypropylene.
