Abstract

1426458 Curing extruded coatings GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 29 Nov 1973 [29 Nov 1972] 55446/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] Polymeric compositions formed as electrical insulation round elongated conductors, e.g. copper wire, are cured by contact with a hot gas heated to at least 500‹ F., moving at a velocity of at least 3000 feet per minute, and under a pressure of at least 45 lbs. per square inch. Suitable gases are nitrogen, air, carbon dioxide and argon; and suitable polymers are ethylene homo- and co-polymers. In an example, a peroxide-containing polyethylene composition is extruded on to copper wire, and the product cured by the above method in an elongated chamber, the whole operation being continuous.
