Abstract
A polymeric compsn. is cured by contacting its surface with a stream of gas heated to >=450 (600-1000) degrees F (or >= 425 degrees F in the case of a halogen-contg. polymer), flowing at >=3000(6000-10000)ft./min while under a pressure of >=45(75-200)psi., in an elongated chamber. The method is applicable to the curing of an elongated electrical conductor insulating covering. The heated gas effectively sweeps away all intermediate air or gas molecules between the stream and compsn. surface, which can obstruct efficient heat transfer. The curing rate obtd. is at least several times faster than achieved with satd. steam, and the high pressure and moisture penetration handicaps of steam are avoided. The appts. required is simple and inexpensive.
