1426322 Impregnated screen for printing D E HARDING 18 Jan 1973 [31 Jan 1972] 2201/72 Heading DIP A screen for use in screen printing is produced by subjecting porous sheet material to tension and filling the pores in the tensioned sheet material with a fluid impregnating material including particulate material removing excess impregnating material from the surfaces of the sheet material, allowing the impregnating material to dry, and releasing the tension on the sheet material when the impregnating material has dried, the impregnating material being such that when dry it will maintain the tension on the sheet material after the applied tension has been removed and the bond between the impregnating material and the fabric can be broken and the impregnating material in the individual pores of the fabric can be removed by a mechanical scraping action on the surface of the sheet material. The sheet material may be woven or knitted fabric, a plastics, metal. metallised or fibrous mesh. Examples of fabrics are silk, organdie, nylon or polyethylene terephthalate fabric. The impregnating material may include a particulate material such as clay, french chalk, diatomaceous earth, a binder such as a printing ink which includes a resin. The impregnated sheet material may be provided with a protective coating, e.g. of varnish after the desired design has been made on the sheet material. The mechanical action may be provided by drawing a stylus over the surface of the sheet material. The sheet material may be mounted on a frame before or after impregnation. The frame may be provided with markings for use in aligning the frame on a surface to be printed.
