Abstract

1426211 Determining degree of insertion of nuclear reactor control members SIEMENS A G 30 Aug 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 40966/73 Heading G1N The degree of insertion of a nuclear reactor control member 4 in a nuclear reactor core is determined by measuring the voltage developed across a secondary winding 5 which is inductively linked in use by a portion 3 of the control member with a primary coil 6 energized at a frequency not greater than 20 c/s to diminish the influence of stray fields on the measurement. The pressure vessel 1 of a pressurized water power reactor has a stainless steel tube 2 welded thereto into which a ferromagnetic lifting rod portion 3 of the reactor control member 4 extends the degree of insertion in the tube 2 correspondingly varying the coupling between coils 5, 6 wound coaxially around the tube. A temperature stabilized A.C. source 8 supplies 6 c/s A.C. to primary 6 and the secondary winding 5 voltage is fed via leads 19 to evaluation circuit 20 in which the voltage is rectified 22, filtered 23 and then applied to amplifier 24 where it is compared with a reference on line 25. The amplifier output may be indicated on line 26 or applied to upper and lower limit signalling devices 29, 30. The number of turns of the primary winding may be increased at its ends or supplementary windings provided so as to increase the sensitivity at the upper and lower limits of the stroke of the control rod. The temperature compensation for the primary voltage can be superimposed on the signal leaving filter 23 by means of a second full-wave rectifier 27 and filter 28.
