Abstract

1,198,031. Measuring eccentricity of cable cores. DAVO G.m.b.H. & CO. K.G. July 29, 1968 [July 29, 1967], No.36117/68. Heading G1N. Apparatus for measuring the eccentricity of a cable core comprises an inductive probe 1 which is driven round the periphery of the cable and an alternating current generator 81 which is driven synchronously with the probe 1 to provide reference signals for two phase sensitive rectifier circuits which derive from the output of the probe signals representing the position of the core in two co-ordinate directions. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cable 97 is guided by rollers 98 past a test head 114 which is rotated about the cable by a motor 80 which also drives the A.C. generator 81. The power supply for and the output signal from the rotating measuring head 114 is coupled through transformer 14, 21 to the stationary parts of the apparatus, further coupling transformers 15, 12 being provided in the head 114 to allow radial adjustment of the probe. The pick-up coil 2 of the probe 1 is connected in the frequency determining circuit of a transistor oscillator 4, the output of which is connected via a third harmonic generator 10 and amplifying and matching stages to an oscillating circuit 31, 32, automatically tuned by a slow acting feedback circuit so that the steepest part of its resonance curve corresponds to the third harmonic of the frequency of oscillator 4. The signal induced in coil 33 is rectified and smoothed and fed via a calibrating potentiometer 48 and amplifying stages to two phase sensitive rectifier circuits including transistors 70-73 which are switched on in turn for half a revolution of the brobe at 90 degrees intervals to produce at terminals 78, 79 signals representing the X and Y co-ordinates of the eccentricity of the core which may be used for controlling apparatus manufacturing the cable. A full wave rectifier bridge 63 and smoothing circuit produces an output indicative of the magnitude of the eccentricity for recording. The generator 81 may have two output coils arranged to produce signals in quadrature for energizing relays 92, 86 for switching the transistors 70-73, or, as shown, the generator 81 may have a single output and a 90 degrees phase shift circuit 82, 83 may be provided. The apparatus may be used for testing the bores of plastic tubes by inserting a resilient stopper, impregnated with metal or metal oxides, into the bore.
