Abstract

1425949 Fuel injection pumps; regulating IC engine fuel injection HOLEC NV 7 May 1973 [5 May 1972] 21710/73 Headings F1A and F1B A fuel injection pump 3 comprises a plurality of pumping units 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, each for supplying an individual engine cylinder 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d through respective lines 28a, 28b, 28c, 28d and each comprising a pumping plunger 15d reciprocable between stops 22, 36 adjustable to vary the stroke of all the plungers in unison. The stops 22, 36 are in the form of cams angularly adjustable in bearings 33; the stop 22 by a barometric device 43, and the stop 36 by a spring-loaded piston 32 slidable in a cylinder 31 subjected to inlet manifold pressure. During starting an electromagnet 44 is energized to move the stop 22 in a direction which increases the delivery. Each plunger 15d is reciprocated by cyclic pressure changes produced in opposed motor chambers 17d, 18d separated by a motor piston 20d integral with the plunger. As shown, the pressure changes are produced by connecting each motor chamber to one of the engine cylinders, but in an alternative arrangement cam driven pistons each disposed in a cylinder connected to one of the motor chambers are used. A feedpump 12 drawing from a tank 11 supplies fuel through a passage 13 to the valve controlled suction ports of all the pumping units 3a.... 3d. In alternative embodiments, Figs. 2-4 (not shown), double-acting pumping plungers are used, each being arranged to supply fuel to a pair of cylinders at the end or middle of their induction period. The plungers are either arranged in parallel, as shown, or end-to-end between stops in the form of rectilinearly movable wedges.
