Abstract

1, 104, 028. Fuel injection systems; reciprocating pumps and motors. SULZER BROS. Ltd. Sept. 13, 1966 [Sept. 14, 1965], No. 40839/66. Headings F1A and F1B. In a fuel injection system a fluid-pressure actuated pump 15, supplied with actuating fluid via a pressure controller 38, delivers fuel to an accumulator V connected to a fuel injector 1. Oil is delivered alternately to the chambers 26 and 27 on opposite sides of the motor piston 25 from an engine driven or separately driven pump 40, at a pressure set by the controller 38, under the control of a rotary valve 35. The pump pistons 19 deliver fuel to the accumulator V at a pressure determined by the controller 38. The operation of the injector 1 is controlled by a control element 16 which connects the injector chamber 10 alternately to the pump delivery line 14 or a line 17 communicating with the fuel reservoir 18 to cause operation of the injector needle 3. A valve element is adjustable axially within the element 16 by means of a lever Q to vary the opening period of the injector 1 and an adjustor T is provided for adjusting the injection timing in relation to the engine crank-shaft driving the control through gears A. The pump 15 may supply a plurality of accumulators and injectors. The injector 1 may be opened by mechanical or electrical means. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the opposite sides of the motor piston (53) are connected to pressure and exhaust alternately by a slide valve (50) which is moved by the oil pressure and controlled by movement of the motor piston. The slide (100) in the slide valve (50) reverses the connections to the piston (53) when the piston reaches the ends of its strokes. The fuel pump may comprise an hydraulic gear-wheel pump and motor combination.
