Abstract

1425575 Adhesive compositions RAYCHEM Ltd 13 April 1973 [28 April 1972] 19780/72 Heading C3P Adhesive compositions comprise (1) a polar copolymer of an α-olefin and up to 20 per cent by weight of (1) and (2) of (2) a filler comprising an inorganic silicon compound containing the Si-O-Si group which has been treated with an organic silicon compound and has a specific surface area of at least 40 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. measured by the BET method. The copolymer may be a copolymer of ethylene with an unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or an unsaturated ester, or an olefin polymer or copolymer which has been grafted with a maleic or fumaric compound. The filler may be a silica or metal silicate which has been treated with trimethyl chlorosilane, octamethyltetracyclosiloxane or tetramethylcyclosiloxane, The compositions may also contain flow modifiers, e.g. polycaprolactones, tackifiers, pigments and stabilizers, and may be used for coating the insides of heat-shrinkable sleeves and end caps for cable joints and terminations. Examples describe adhesive compositions comprising trimethyl chlorosilane treated silica, antioxidant and (1) ethylene/vinyl acetate/ methacrylic acid copolymer and hydrolysed N - bis - 2 - hydroxyethyl - 3 - aminopropyl triethoxysilane; (2 and 4) ethylene/vinyl acetate/methacrylic acid copolymers and polycaprolactone; (5) polycaprolactone together with ethylene/vinyl acetate/methacrylic acid copolymers, optionally with ethylene/ethyl acrylate copolymer, or with ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer; (6) ethylene/methylmethacrylate, ethylene/methyl acrylate or ethylene/ ethyl acrylate copolymer; and (7) methyl ethyl ketone/formaldehyde resin tackifier and ethylene/ethyl acrylate resin grafted with itaconic acid or ethylene/vinyl acetate resins grafted with itaconic acid or monomethyl itaconate in the presence of t-butyl peroctoate; and (3) compositions comprising ethylene/vinyl acetate / methacrylic acid copolymer, polycaprolactone and actioxidant together with silica which has been treated with N-#-aminoethyl - γ - aminopropyl trimethoxysilane, vinyl tris (2 - methoxyethoxy)silane, #- (3,4 - epoxycyclohexyl)ethyl methoxy silane, bis (hydroxyethyl - γ - aminopropyl triethoxysilane or vinyl triethoxysilane.
