Abstract

1425475 Bending rods and bars STANFORD COMPONENTS Ltd 7 May 1973 [7 Feb 1972] 5645/72 Heading B3E Apparatus for bending high tensile steel rods or bars to a desired curvature comprises a device for clamping the rod or bar against a former and at least one movable roller for overbending the rod or bar about the former to a predetermined degree. Upon retraction of the roller the limbs of the component so formed assume a required position, e.g. a U-shape. A base plate 10 has a guide channel 11 which accommodates a slidable clamping member 15 for clamping a rod 55 against a shaped, fixed roller 33. Two converging guide channels 34, 35 are disposed either side of channel 11 and accommodate respective support members 36, 36<SP>1</SP> which are slidable in the channels and support rollers 45, 45<SP>1</SP> having circumferential grooves to engage the rod 55. The clamping member 15 and support members 36, 361 are movable against the bias of respective springs 25,51,51<SP>1</SP> upon downward movement of cammed drivers 27, 53. A rod cutting assembly 60 is disposed alongside channel 36<SP>1</SP> and has a cutting member 61 also movable by a cammed driver 71 to cut the rod 55 to a desired length before the bending operation. Upon downward movement of a ram (not shown) drivers 27, 53, 71 move downwards to cause horizontal movement of member 15, supports 36, 36<SP>1</SP> and cutting member 61. After the rod is cut and clamped supports 36, 36<SP>1</SP> continue to move so that rollers 45, 45<SP>1</SP> engage opposite ends of the rod and bend it around roller 33. The rollers roll along the limbs so formed to a predetermined position determined by setting of the downward movement of the drivers. Upon relaxing the pressure the rollers and clamping members return to an inoperative position under the bias of the springs and the deformed rod assumes its required shape. Such apparatus may be used for the manufacture of U-bolts where it may be more convenient to employ two bending operations using the same apparatus.
